ADHD in Women: Why You Can’t Follow Instructions (Even When You’re Trying)

"Couple standing inside the doorway looking confused, woman thinking 'How did I forget that' ADHD moment"

ADHD and following instructions can turn a simple list into a comedy routine. Step one? Nailed it. Step two? Still with you. Somewhere around step four, your brain has wandered off to investigate something completely unrelated while the instructions quietly continue the journey without you.

🤨 “WHY DO I MESS THIS UP EVERY TIME?”

ADHD in women can make simple instructions feel like:

👉 a group project
👉 with no leader
👉 and your brain didn’t show up

Because somehow…

Every time someone asks you to do something…

👉 you mess it up.

Not a little.
Not occasionally.

👉 CONSISTENTLY.

Like it’s part of your personality brand.

🛒 THE GROCERY STORE INCIDENT

(AKA: How Milk Betrayed Me)

“Hey, can you grab a few things?”

Me:

👉 “Absolutely. I am a capable adult woman. I WILL NOT FAIL.”

I listen carefully.
I nod like I’m in a board meeting.
I repeat it back like I’m closing a deal.

I go to the store…

👉 …and my brain immediately goes: “We don’t know her.”

🧾 WHAT I COME HOME WITH

👉 The wrong milk 🥛
(Why are there 97 types?? Since when is milk a personality trait??)

👉 3 things I thought they said

👉 2 things I decided were “close enough”

👉 Missing the ONE thing they actually needed

Every. Single. Time.

🧠 “BUT I WAS PAYING ATTENTION”

This is the part that makes you want to scream into a pillow.

Because:

👉 you WERE listening
👉 you WERE trying
👉 you cared A LOT

Meanwhile your brain:

👉 “Cool, we heard item #1… kinda got #2… #3? Never existed.”

📱 THE “JUST TEXT ME” PHASE

(Spoiler: Still Chaos)

So you upgrade.

👉 “Text it to me.”

Perfect system, right?

WRONG.

Now the list exists…

But:

👉 you forget to check it
👉 you read it too fast
👉 you THINK you remember it (you do not 😏)
👉 you confidently grab the wrong thing anyway

📝 WRITING IT DOWN (LOL OKAY)

Tried that too.

Works great…

👉 IF the paper doesn’t vanish into another dimension

That note disappears faster than:

👉 your motivation on laundry day

Gone.
Missing.
Living with your lost keys.

🧱 THE INVISIBLE BRICK WALL

Here’s the weirdest part.

When it’s YOUR task?

👉 clear
👉 focused
👉 handled

When it’s someone else’s?

💥 brick wall.

Like your brain says:

👉 “Incoming request cannot be processed.”

And you’re standing there like:

👉 “I CARE. WHY IS THIS NOT WORKING??”

🚨 REAL QUICK (BEFORE YOU FORGET WHY YOU’RE HERE 😏)

If this feels familiar:

👉 losing track of time
👉 underestimating EVERYTHING
👉 late… or weirdly early

😵‍💫 WHY THIS HAPPENS

This is real ADHD behavior.

Not:

❌ laziness
❌ carelessness
❌ lack of effort

It’s:

👉 working memory dropping steps
👉 processing overload
👉 attention jumping tracks
👉 executive dysfunction glitches

👉 your brain is running 47 tabs… and one is playing music but you can’t find it.

🔄 WHAT ACTUALLY HELPED

One change that works REALLY well:

👉 handle THEIR items FIRST. Immediately.

Before your brain switches to your stuff.

Because once it does?

👉 mission deleted.

Other things that help:

👉 ask for short, simple lists
👉 repeat it out loud
👉 check list BEFORE checkout
👉 stop trusting memory like it’s reliable (it’s not 😏)

💔 THE PART NO ONE TALKS ABOUT

This isn’t just forgetting.

It FEELS like:

👉 people don’t trust you
👉 you’re unreliable
👉 you’re “not paying attention”
👉 you’re somehow less capable

And that part? That’s what actually hurts.

Because the truth is:

👉 you care MORE than most people.

Your brain just doesn’t cooperate.

💡 THE TRUTH

You’re not careless.
You’re not broken.
You’re not failing.

Your brain processes information differently.

And once you understand that?

👉 you stop blaming yourself and start working WITH your brain

🕒 THIS IS WHERE EVERYTHING CONNECTS

This isn’t just instructions.

🎬 MIC DROP

You didn’t mess it up because you didn’t care.

👉 You messed it up because your brain dropped the steps mid-process.

🚨 HOLD UP — BEFORE YOU LEAVE

Let me guess…

👉 you’ve messed up simple instructions
👉 you KNOW you were listening
👉 you still got it wrong

💀 same.

🧠 THIS ISN’T A YOU PROBLEM

Your brain:

👉 drops steps
👉 overloads easily
👉 switches tracks fast

Meanwhile the world says:

👉 “Just pay attention”

Your brain says:

👉 “Best I can do is… partial information.”
