Everything Felt Muted Except My Thoughts: ADHD, Slow Processing Speed, and the Pressure to Respond Fast

ADHD and slow processing speed can make a simple question feel like your brain just put the entire conversation on hold with elevator music. You heard the question. You know you have an answer. Your brain is just buffering โ and naturally, the perfect response may arrive thirty seconds after everyone has moved on.
๐ณ โWAITโฆ WHY DID I SAY THAT??โ
Have you ever answered a question too fastโฆ
said something weirdโฆ
and then thought of the real answer 30 seconds later?
๐ yeahโฆ same.
๐ง WHEN MY BRAIN GOES QUIET (BUT ALSO LOUD?)
When I was younger, I could get so deep into my thoughts that everything around me feltโฆ muted.
Not off.
Justโฆ lower.
People talking.
Noise happening.
Life moving.
Meanwhile my brain:
๐ โPlease stand by. Tarah is currently unavailable.โ
I wasnโt being rude.
I wasnโt ignoring anyone.
๐ my brain just went inward
๐คฏ THE PART NO ONE EXPLAINS
From the outside, it looks like:
๐ not paying attention
๐ distracted
๐ checked out
From the inside, it feels like:
๐ trying to keep up while everything is moving too fast
๐ง ADHD DOESNโT ALWAYS LOOK LOUD
People think ADHD looks like:
๐ bouncing off walls
๐ nonstop energy
๐ chaos
Sometimes it does.
But sometimes?
๐ it looks like silence
๐ zoning out
๐ missing details
๐ getting stuck in your own thoughts
๐ feeling mentally overloaded
๐ while everyone else somehow got the instruction manual to life
๐ฅ THE LABELS
Instead of understandingโฆ I got labeled:
๐ โspaceyโ
๐ โditzyโ
๐ โscatteredโ
Which is wildโฆ
Because my brain wasnโt broken.
๐ it was overloaded
๐ง THE THING THAT FINALLY MADE IT MAKE SENSE
Processing speed.
๐ how fast your brain takes in information
๐ makes sense of it
๐ responds
๐ it has NOTHING to do with intelligence
You can be:
๐ smart
๐ thoughtful
๐ creative
โฆand still need more time to process.
๐ตโ๐ซ WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE IN REAL LIFE
๐ hearing words but needing a second for meaning
๐ pausing when asked a question
๐ forgetting why you walked into a room
๐ getting lost when directions come too fast
My brain sometimes feels like:
๐ an old computer with 17 tabs openโฆ and one is playing music for no reason
๐ฃ THE PART NO ONE TALKS ABOUT: BLURTING
Hereโs where it gets messy.
When someone asks me something:
๐ my brain blanks
๐ pressure hits
๐ silence feels uncomfortable
So instead of waitingโฆ
๐ I used to blurt out whatever came first
Not the real answer.
Not a good answer.
๐ justโฆ an answer
Then later:
๐ โWHY did I say that??โ
๐ง WHAT I DO NOW
๐ I pause
Sometimes longer than people like.
And yes โ it annoys impatient people.
But honestly?
๐ why should I carry all that pressure?
Iโd rather:
๐ pause
๐ process
๐ answer correctly
than:
๐ panic
๐ rush
๐ regret it later
๐ that pause changed everything
๐ง THIS IS WHAT IT ACTUALLY FEELS LIKE
Itโs not:
๐ not caring
Itโs:
๐ needing time your brain isnโt being given
Itโs like:
๐ life is on fast-forwardโฆ and youโre buffering
๐ก THE SHIFT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
I went from:
๐ โwhat is wrong with me?โ
to:
๐ โohโฆ THIS is whatโs happeningโ
That shift?
๐ removed so much shame
๐จ REAL QUICK (BEFORE YOUR BRAIN DRIFTS ๐)
If this feels familiar:
๐ losing track mid-thought
๐ feeling behind in conversations
๐ needing more time than people expect

๐ THIS IS WHERE IT CONNECTS
This isnโt just processing speed.
Itโs also:
๐ time blindness
๐ attention shifts
๐ overwhelm
๐ delayed response timing

I wasnโt slow.
๐ I just wasnโt given time to think.
