ADHD vs “We’re Leaving Early” People

Cartoon showing ADHD person overwhelmed and distracted while another person is prepared to leave early

Always running late with ADHD can make “we’re leaving early” people seem like an entirely different species. They arrive twenty minutes early, radiant and calm, possibly carrying snacks. You arrive as the event starts after surviving three unrelated emergencies in your own hallway — one of which involved finding the phone that was already in your hand.

🚢 “We’re Leaving at 10:30…”

Someone walks in like:

👉 “We’re leaving at 10:30 a.m.”

Meanwhile I’m like:

👉 “The ship leaves at 2:00 p.m… why are we acting like we WORK there??”

🤡

🤡 WHAT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING

They’re stressed about being late.

I’m stressed about being rushed.

Because when I’m getting ready…

I’m not just “packing.”

I’m running a full internal circus:

👉 Did I pack this
👉 Did I forget that
👉 Why am I holding this
👉 Wait… what was I just doing

💥 THEN SOMEONE SAYS “HURRY UP”

System crash.

Immediate.
Catastrophic.

Now I’m not packing anymore…

I’m just walking around holding random objects like:

🦝 a confused raccoon with a mission it cannot remember

🧠 REALITY CHECK

We are still leaving…

👉 THREE HOURS EARLY

They think they’re preventing stress.

My brain is like:

👉 “Amazing plan. Truly. Unfortunately… YOU are the stress.”

⏳ WHY THIS HAPPENS

Nothing makes me forget everything faster than:

👉 “Hurry up.”

Because now my brain is juggling:

👉 time pressure
👉 task switching
👉 panic
👉 and whatever the hell I just picked up

🔥 THIS ISN’T A MOTIVATION PROBLEM

It’s not that you don’t care.

It’s not that you’re disorganized.

Your brain just doesn’t process:

👉 time
👉 urgency
👉 transitions

the same way.

So when someone speeds you up…

👉 your brain shuts DOWN instead of speeding up

🕒 THIS IS WHERE EVERYTHING FALLS APART

You’re not just “running late.”

You’re:

👉 losing track of what you’re doing
👉 forgetting steps mid-task
👉 restarting the same thing 5 times
👉 somehow holding a spoon with no explanation

💀 incredible.

🎬 MIC DROP

If I’m not driving the ship…

WHY am I there 3 hours early??

🚨 HOLD UP — BEFORE YOU LEAVE

Let me guess…

👉 You start getting ready… then forget what you’re doing
👉 You get rushed… and everything gets worse
👉 You somehow end up holding random items like it’s part of the plan

💀 yeah… same.

🧠 THIS ISN’T A YOU PROBLEM

Your brain:

👉 loses track mid-task
👉 struggles with time pressure
👉 shuts down when rushed

Meanwhile everyone else is like:

👉 “Just go faster”

And your brain is like:

👉 “Best I can do is… stand here holding a spoon.”

🔥 YOU DON’T NEED MORE DISCIPLINE
